Yacht charter and sailing on the Canary Islands

A total number of eight islands build the extraordinary archipelago – named Canary Islands. The islands of La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote – all of them are unique and beautiful in their way.

Seen from the bird’s perspective, you could think that the Canaries are a small cute continent close to Africa … no … the Canary Islands are Spanish territory.

A sailing route starting from the north could begin at the northern island above Lanzarote, down to Fuerteventura and then to Gran Canaria.

One of the most popular starting points for a yacht charter on the Canaries is surely Tenerife, from where you arrive in La Gomera in a few hours, to El Hierro and finally to La Palma.

Nearly every yacht sport enthusiasts knows Gran Canaria (even when they never was there), because from that beautiful island the – probably – most famous yacht rally – the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) – is starting every year.

Between October and December, most of the marinas are very crowded and fully booked (already several months before), because a lot of crews choose Gran Canaria as the starting point for an Atlantic crossing.

The yacht charter and sailing tourism has grown in the Canary Islands in recent years and has been supported by rich investors and by the Spanish authorities with good marinas.

Entry and exit formalities

The Canary Islands belong to Spain and therefore they are a member of the EU as well, but because of their location special entry and exit formalities for yachts are applied.

All yachts (whether EU registration or not) are treated as if they were from non-EU-countries.

However, only the travel documents of non-EU-citizens are stamped by the authorities.

A very pleasant side effect of the Canaries is that they count as a duty-free area, no VAT, but the authority is charging a five percent “local tax”.

Services for yachts and yacht charters on the Canary Islands

The marinas, docking possibilities and service possibilities are good and have all necessaries for the yacht charter and sailing tourism.

As an alternative to the marinas there are numerous yacht clubs on all islands – but, charter yachts are not everywhere and always welcome in those clubs.
